Protect Your Trees and Our Property Values from Oak Wilt |
|
|
Sunday, 28 February 2010 16:22 |
|
Our neighborhood continues to lose one of its most important assets--the beautiful live oaks and red oaks that form a shady, green canopy over our streets and homes. These oak trees are being threatened by a contagious disease called oak wilt. Over the past twenty years, Austin has lost more than 10,000 oaks to the deadly and infectious oak wilt disease. For both individuals and the City as a whole, this loss is felt by increased utility bills, reduced property values, and a sense of devastation.
Protect the value of your property by learning about Oak Wilt, and become aware of the ways to detect, correct and stop the spread of this terrible blight.
A few important tips to help stop the spread of Oak Wilt:
DO NOT PRUNE OAKS from February through June during the Oak Wilt carrier beetle's peak season. You can help enforce this ban by reminding everyone of the real and expensive dangers to our neighborhood oaks. Everyone needs to protect our property values and oak trees.
It is strongly recommended that you employ only certified arborists to prune your valuable Oaks. Avoid the uncertified tree service vendors who roam the neighborhoods and perform unsafe Oak Wilt practices. Find local certified arborists and check with the Better Business Bureau:

Tips:
Lock your vehicles - including truck tool boxes. It doesn't take long for someone to cruise through the neighborhood "flipping" door handles and grabbing whatever is inside, then moving on down the street.
Mailbox:
- Don't leave outgoing checks in your mailbox
- Bring in your mail as soon as possible
- Watch for mis-addressed mail in your mailbox
- Report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office
- If you experience any theft of mail, report to the Sheriff and to the Postmaster (our mail is delivered through the Post Office at Lake Creek & Hymeadow)

Register for Emergency Notification System |
|
|
Monday, 05 September 2011 11:45 |
|
Pct. 1 Commissioner Lisa Birkman reminds Williamson County residents that you can register your cell phone number for emergency notifications through the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Emergency Notification System. It is sometimes called reverse 911.
For information, visit their website http://wireless.capcog.org/ENS/PhoneMap.aspx?NewUser, and register your cell phone so that you will be called in case of an emergency in your area.
Fire Danger remains high as evidenced by the fires in Pflugerville, Bastrop and Steiner Ranch: please exercise extreme caution. The Emergency Notification System may not be activated immediately - it is important to watch local news coverage for immediate danger information. |
