Sign-Up for Alerts: Springtime Storms and Wildfires

Springtime in Texas is often accompanied by severe storms:  there are several alerts offered to residents in case of outages.

Wildfire season is April to October, and regional Emergency Management officials encourage residents to be prepared, and to sign up for emergency warnings.  Visit the Warn Central Texas website for information on signing up for alerts, and preparing for wildfire season.

While most of our NASWC community has been developed with residential neighborhoods and commercial buildings, we still have some undeveloped properties around the area.  And just across Parmer Lane is the extensive Robinson Ranch grasslands.  Several years ago, a fire at the corner of Anderson Mill Road and Parmer Lane was a reminder of the dangers of grass fires when combined with high temperatures and dry conditions and wind.  Visit the TAMU Forest Service website for information about wildfires and urban areas.

Emergency Preparedness

Register your cell phone number for emergency notifications through the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Emergency Notification System.  It is sometimes called reverse 911.  For information, visit their website http://wireless.capcog.org/ENS/PhoneMap.aspx?NewUser, and register your cell phone so that you will be called in case of an emergency in your area.

The Emergency Notification System may not be activated immediately – it is important to watch local news coverage for immediate danger information.

Download the “Ready, Set, Go! Your Personal Wildfire Action Plan” brochure prepared by the Texas Forest Service in association with the International Fire Chiefs association.

Red Cross has information on their website about “Get a Kit – Make a Plan – Be Informed”.  Click on the red NEXT button on each page to navigate through the information.  Information also available at the FEMA website.
