Potential Broken Pipes and Temporary Water Fill Station

A note from Chief Landi at Jollyville Fire Station:
Per the weather service, we should have one more night of below freezing temps tonight and then be in to a warming trend.  Temps are supposed to get to about 40 degrees today so roads should be better but this also starts the next phase of this weather event – thawing pipes.

Even those who never lost water or power may have issues with broken water pipes.  Exterior pipes, such as swimming pool pumps and irrigations systems have been subjected to brutal temps for almost a week so these may soon become an issue.  Those homes that’ve lost power for the duration are our biggest worries.  Also, for those who still don’t have water, we may not know if you have a broken pipe until the city pressurizes the system again and this may be next week.

The Chief posted Friday afternoon: Good Afternoon!
The incredible folks at North Austin Municipal Utility District #1 (NAMUD#1), are allowing us to set up a water fill station at the corner of Amasia Drive and Humphrey Drive.  We will be using the water from their fire hydrant so, while we don’t recommend drinking it due to less filtration (pipe rust), if you do, you will need to boil it.  We are thinking it can be used for bathing and toilets.  You will also need to bring your own containers for us to fill.  We will have two garden hoses set up to fill two vehicles at a time so it won’t be a rapid process so please be patient.

You will need to access the fill station from Amasia Drive so we can still keep the roadway open to two-direction traffic flow.  Also, our neighbors are helping us all out in our time of need so please be respectful when driving to and leaving the area.  Best access will be from Anderson Mill Road, then turn onto Amasia Drive, and then a right onto Humprey Drive.

We plan on opening the station about 3pm today and keeping it open until dusk due to safety issues.  Then we will open it tomorrow after the temperature rises above freezing.  We will do our best to keep this site open until everyone gets their water service restored by the City of Austin.
